The project focuses on the areas of labor history, women's history, and gender studies. It aims to examine various forms, conditions, and perceptions of work through a gender perspective. Geographically, the project covers the territory of present-day Slovenia, taking into account its multiculturalism (in border and urban areas). The temporal framework is bounded by the mid-19th century and extends until the end of the 20th century. These temporal and spatial starting points allow for a comparative analysis of women's labor markets both in peacetime and wartime, in different political and economic systems, and political frameworks (Austro-Hungarian Empire, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, occupation regimes, Allied military control, Yugoslavia as a socialist republic, and independent Slovenia). The project pays special attention to the continuities and discontinuities in shaping the labor market for women, especially during periods of institutional and political transitions, coinciding with cultural and ideological upheavals. The project's goal is to analyze various types and forms of women's work in the primary sector (agricultural work), secondary sector (industrial work), tertiary sector (saleswomen), and quaternary sector (teachers and healthcare workers). In addition, the project will focus on hybrid forms of work and the work of women intellectuals.
YEAR 1: In the first year, the project team will analyze existing literature and identify available archival and other sources. Initial research will focus on various forms of work in the twentieth century, especially during the interwar period, post-World War II, and during the transition period after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. At the end of the year, an international expert meeting will be organized, bringing together experts in the fields of labor history, anthropology, and sociology.
YEAR 2: The second year will see a conference building on the results of the first scholarly meeting, focusing mainly on research gaps identified the previous year. The research team will also begin analyzing visual materials (representations of work), which will be exhibited at the project's final exhibition in the last year.
YEAR 3: The final year will be dedicated primarily to concluding the research work; writing, editing, and publishing scientific results. The results of the two-year research will be published in individual papers as well as in edited volume. Along with the publication of the collection, an exhibition will be opened, showcasing and contextualizing the History of Women's Work in the 19th and 20th Centuries in Slovenia.
