Description

The project examines the language and discourses of (post)pandemic “permacrisis”, particularly in the post-Yugoslav and Eastern European contexts. While crisis has traditionally been used to denote moments of major social and political transformation, the word is increasingly understood to mean “a state of greater or lesser permanence” (Krzyzanowski et al. 2023). Marked by a global pandemic, a protracted climate crisis and the outbreak of new waves of conflict, the third decade of the 21st century seems to be truly asserting a new language of permacrisis, which is clearly never just a matter of naming. Building on the results of the CRISMET project, the project explores how figurative linguistic changes allow us to trace changing conceptualizations of control, civil liberties, collectivities and social relations through dominant conceptual schemes that are particularly prevalent in the era of digital media and social networks.

The broader aim of the project is to lay the foundations for an interdisciplinary, language-oriented study of crisis discourse. The project introduces a multidimensional metaphorical methodological approach to the analysis of public discourse, combining the study of metaphors and cognitive linguistics with social science studies of politics, history and cultural memory, as a flexible interdisciplinary model suitable for addressing discourses of crisis and social transformation.

The project is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, under the measure Public Call for (co)financing projects and programmes to strengthen the international mobility of Slovenian researchers and research organisations and to promote the international integration of Slovenian applicants, the 3rd development area “Smart, sustainable and inclusive growth” and the RRI component – “Research, development and innovation” and Investment C: “(Co)financing projects and programmes to strengthen the mobility of Slovenian researchers and research organisations and to promote the international mobility of Slovenian applicants”.
