Dr. Primož Pipan is employed as a researcher at the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts as a researcher at the Anton Melik Geographical Institute. In 2004, he graduated from the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana with a thesis entitled Cross-border cooperation on the Slovenian-Croatian border in Istria as the external border of the European Union. In 2011, he obtained his doctorate at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska with his thesis Comparison of Post-Earthquake Reconstruction in Italy and Slovenia after the Earthquakes in the Upper Soča Valley and Friuli. He is interested in heritage, geographical names, natural disasters, community practices, and political geography.
The field of research is human geography. The research is diverse, which is a result of research funding. The researcher is a co-author of publications on various topics, such as: landscape heritage between nature and culture, public participation in post-earthquake reconstruction, participatory research in local community development, industrial identity of a post-industrial society, community practices in the management of small drinking water supply systems, changes in land use in cultural landscapes, abandoned cultural landscapes, transport poverty in Slovenia, the search for native speakers for the purposes of a linguistic atlas and many others.
He hopes that research into the landscape as a meeting point of natural and cultural heritage will at least help to halt the decline of salt production in the Sečovlje salt pans. Perhaps even to the revival of the Musem of saltmaking in its original sense as an open-air museum, as it successfully operated in the period 1999–2014, when the experiential practice of medieval saltmaking was accessible to outside visitors.
